With the characteristic efficient and swift action that is the hallmark of McGill bureaucracy, the MUNACA labor dispute was settled early September 1st.
“We have come to a decision that balances the concerns of the union with the fiscal realities facing the university. A house divided against itself cannot stand! The absence of non-academic workers would be unacceptable and a prolonged strike would be a stain on the reputable name of McGill University!” exclaimed McGill principal Heather Munroe-Blum from the top of the Dawson Hall steps, and then proceeded to crowd surf on top of a loving sea of MUNACA and non-MUNACA members alike. After the rally ended with parting hugs and apologies from both sides for any rash actions or words, the principal was reached for further comment.
“After all, we couldn’t have continued the academic year with such animosity. Students should never have to cross a picket line to go to class,” stated an exuberant Principal Munroe-Blum.
MUNACA members shared many of the same sentiments. “Imagine having my pay cut down to 30% of what it was for an indefinite time! Cause I can’t! I have a wife and kids at home!” said IT technician Kevin Smith with a hearty laugh. MUNACA president Kevin Whittaker displayed a similar relieved attitude. “I hope to goodness I never have to lead my union members in a raspy rendition of We’re Not Gonna Take It. I mean I love them all but they can’t carry a tune or tempo and besides, I hate Twisted Sister”.
